FREE TABLE QUILT
At a recent retreat I found myself not wanting to work on "ALL" the projects I brought with me and began looking for something else to motivate me. I wandered over to the free table and found a book of upholstery fabrics. I set myself a challenge to use these fabrics in a new quilt.
I began by cutting the samples to a uniform size. After they were all a uniform size I cut them up again and sewed them into quarter square triangle blocks. (This was all done randomly). I then assembled the quilt, again using a random method. This was as far as I got at the retreat. I took the quilt top back to my studio and started working on it there.

At my studio I sandwiched the quilt top with wool batting and used another upholstery fabric for the backing. I then machine quilted it with cotton thread.
After quilting I overdyed the quilt and washed it.
The next and last step (so far!!!) is a silk screen discharging process. Stay tuned for more!!

BEGINNING QUILTING
Students at the Wild Rose Quilt Shop (in Orting) have finished their 5-part Beginning Quilting sessions. I really enjoy teaching new quilters and watching their excitement for quilting blossom. As you can see by the pictures, even though they have all made the same quilt each has their own distinct style and take on quilting. Whether it's for a senior project or new grandbabies, quilting is just plain fun.

3-D ILLUSIONS WITH "DISCHARGE"
Colleen Wise, local artist, author and teacher, will be teaching a one day workshop "Casting Shadows with Discharge".
Create a 3-D illusion on your quilt! In this workshop you will learn to create leaves (or other objects) that appear to float on the surface of your quilt. There's nothing difficult about this process and the results are amazing. "Discharging" is the process of removing dye from fabric. We'll use bleach in a controlled way to create the perfect background. Adding the leaves or other objects to this background creates the illusion of "floating" above the surface of your quilt. It's okay if you haven't learned to dye - this is a different process altogether. Easy enough for beginners and a fun surface design technique for experts.
The workshop is scheduled for July 12th, 2009, Sunday, 9:30 to 4:30. Enrollment fee is $60 per person. E-mail Debi at itsdebi@hotmail.com to get a registration form and to reserve your place in this workshop.

SPRING MYSTERY - TRINK'S HEART
Saturday was a very busy day at the studio. Our second "mystery" started with treats that were actually "clues" to the name of the quilt. These party favors were waiting for the students when they arrived in the morning. Along with coffee, tea and a variety of home-made breads for starters.
Trina got the students started right away. Lots of things to get done before the end of the day. Linda and Carol get some extra one on one with Trina.
Barb reading the clues trying to figure it out.
Nancy standing proudly next to her quilt.
Linda was very happy with her quilt.
Barb's quilt reflects her own style. Barb will also be teaching classes out of the studio. Her new company "The Quilted B" is a new on-line quilt store. Check out her store and classes she will be offering at www.thequiltedb.com
Carol's quilt. All the fabric came from her own personal inventory of fabric. Didn't need to purchase anything to make a great quilt.
Although there is no pink in this quilt, Barb is tickled pink with the results.
This is my own version of "Trink's Heart". This was the test quilt. The pieced border was an option available to all students. If you would like to purchase a copy of this pattern contact Trina at cooksandquilts@hotmail.com or Debi at itsdebi@hotmail.com

My Work in Progress
I have been fascinated for a number of years with surface design. Dyeing, discharging, painting, foiling, screen printing. Various techniques applied to fabric to change the surface and texture for use in my quilts. This quilt "Nine" has a number techniques and various types of fabrics. There are old table clothes, canvas, and a chenille bedspread. These fabrics have been dyed, discharged, screen printed and painted.
This is a detail of "Nine". Free motion quilting was used to highlight the various textures.
I recently started a new series using more surface design techniques. This series has a little bit of a twist to it. The surface design has been done after the quilting was done. The next quilt was assembled with commercial fabrics, heavily quilted then the surface design was done. This quilt was discharged and overdyed a number of times.
This is a detail of the quilting.
I am very excited about this new series. I started another new quilt. I restricted the pallet on this quilt. I used yellow hand-dyed fabric and simple shapes.
Keeping the shapes simple I started quilting for the first level of texture.
Quilting finished and once through the washing machine. The next step is the beginning of the surface design.
